Prevention and Fitness Opportunities in Physiotherapy, Rheumatic Disease Clinic Berlin-Buch
Since the move to the completely renovated Ludwig Hoffmann building, the health training staff have been able to constantly develop and offer new prevention options.

„Without a doubt our greatest innovation is the warm water activity pool. Before that we had to take our patients to Buch Hospital Region 7 for water treatment. That took a lot of time“, claimed Susanne Weidner, the head of physiotherapy. Now there are lots of aqua-aerobics courses in the temperature-controlled bath.
The pool water has a temperature of 32/33 degrees and the water is 1.30 meters deep. All kinds of aquatic treatment can be carried out in this pool. „It’s not just us who use the pool, members of the Berlin Brandenburg Rheumatic League also use the pool“, says Susanne Weidner.
Following the move to the renovated clinic building there has been an improvement in the working conditions for Susanne Weidner and her twelve colleagues. „We now have almost 500 square meters of open, friendly rooms fitted out with the latest equipment. Our patients also feel better in this environment.“
The main users of the physiotherapy facilities, which now also occupies gymnastic rooms, are the patients in the 80-bed rheumatic clinic as well as the 150 to 200 associated out-patients. „Of course, they receive the best of care from us“, says Susanne Weidner.
„However, more and more we are involved with an increasing number of other out-patients, to whom we offer the normal range of physiotherapy procedures. We can provide them with any form of therapy prescribed by their general practitioner.“
Prevention courses for everyone
In addition to treatments, physiotherapy is offering an increasing number of prevention courses. „For example, we now offer infant swimming with Paula Kernchen“, says Susanne Weidner. „Babies aged four to nine months can have fun in the water along with their parents.“ Another innovation in the new facility is the gymnastic hall with its large mirror wall. This is where the physiotherapist, Daniela Jakubowki, offers medical Qi Gong.
Other innovations includ things like cardio fit – functional aerobics and step aerobics for people who want to remain fit into their old age. The cardio fit step aerobics involves about half an hour of choreography. Following this, the participants carry out stretching and relaxation exercises with the course leader, Paula Kernchen. Light power training without equipment finishes off the course. Although the participants end up feeling exhausted they also feel fortunate because they know: today I have been health-conscious and they know: exercise is good for my body. The course takes place every week and lasts ca. 90 minutes. Since August, there has been a Nordic Walking Course with Catrin Markert and there has
„As far as all these prevention options are concerned, the new options of increased activity, we are careful to ensure that our colleagues are certified, and so have completed training and passed an exam as a course leader. This is a qualitative difference from other options of this nature“ says Weidner. The professional training of health trainers also means that the cost of any claims (in part and depending on the relevant insurance scheme) are covered by the legal insurance companies up to 80%. Each person with GKV insurance is entitled, annually, to a health prevention course! Prevention makes more sense and saves the German healthcare system money. However, anyone who have discovered how much fun can be had from group activity and fitness training, and the enthusiasm of the course leaders themselves, wants to continue after the foundation course.
In the next few weeks the physiotherapy options will be expanded even further. „We are getting more equipment, so that in the future we will also be able to offer gymnastic activities using equipment“, says the head of the facility. All the courses on offer can be seen on the website www.therawell-berlin.de. , and you can also enroll there. Visiting times for the physiotherapy department of the Rheumatic Disease Clinic are Monday to Thursday, 6.45 am to 7.00 pm, Friday from 6.45 am to 4.00 pm and you can contact it by telephone on 94 79 23 40.
Based in Buch for 55 years
These offers mean that physiotherapy has become a fundamental part of the Bucher Rheumatic Disease Clinic, which is now part of the Immanuel Hospital. The Rheumatic Disease Clinic was established in 1951 as the Department of Rheumatology in the Ludwig Hoffmann Hospital. Initially, it had 50 beds. In 1993, at the wishes of the staff its sponsor was changed to the Immanuel Krankenhaus GmbH. In the last three years buildings 201 and 203 were extended for the clinic. This spring the new hospital buildings were occupied.
Of course, the basic physiotherapy procedures also include massages as well as every conceivable treatment option such as hydro- and electrotherapy.
