Gauß gymnasium
Mrs. Dr. Stäbe-Wegemund, directorin
Detailed work has now started on the new concept
Since the start of the school year, the Buch gymnasium has only had 350 pupils. A seventh class was not created. The reason for this is the falling number of pupils in north Berlin. „In actual fact, our gymnasium should have four classes for each stage. At present there are still two class 7s“, reports the school head, Dr. Ute Stäbe-Wegemund.

However, a quick look at the primary school in the Pankow district shows : The number of pupils is starting to increase again. So, according to a political decision, the Gauß gymnasium should not be closed. „One thing is clear: we cannot go on the way we used to. This has given rise to the idea to develop a new concept that is very attractive“, explains Dr. Stäbe-Wegemund. The goal of this new approach is not just to recruit pupils from the region but also to get pupils from elsewhere to come to the Gauß gymnasium.
The new concept is based on three pillars. Pillar one is the orientation to the natural sciences. „A new place like Buch really offers this. There are lots of scientific establishments here as well as the Life Sciences Learning Laboratory that we already collaborate with.“
Second pillar: In future there should be all-day provision. This means that pupils can spend the entire day in the school. „That fits in well with the natural sciences concept“, says Dr. Stäbe-Wegemund. For example, in the afternoons, pupils can carry out experiments in the laboratory.
The third pillar of the new concept would involve a double qualification. On the one hand, pupils can complete their abitur and, on the other, they can complete a course of professional training. „We want to present this offer with two cooperating partners, the Max Delbrück Centre and the secondary education centre, the Lise Meitner School. They have the technical qualifications for practical professional training.“
There should be class 7s again
Regional politics agrees with this new concept for the Gauß gymnasium. After the basic planning, the finer details will be worked out by Autumn 2006. In late autumn, the gymnasium wants to launch an advertising campaign. „In the school year 2007/2008, it is our aim to start a class seven from the region as well as another class seven with pupils from other parts of Berlin“, says the school head.
In the meantime, the everyday school activities and the extra-curricular activities continue. Accordingly, at the end of the last school year, a „Gauß day“ was started for the first time and it is intended that this should become a permanent feature.
„On that day, in very different subjects, the best in each class stage was assessed as well as the best class of each year“, reported Dr. Stäbe-Wegemund. „This day was such a success that we also want to hold it in this school year.“
The partnership with a school on the island of Réunion will also continue. „Every year we organize a pupil exchange. This year guests from the partner school came to us and next year some of our pupils will fly out to the island for a reciprocal visit.“
First final examination with a dream result of 1.0
The school is also deeply involved in projects in the region. For example, in a project with scientists from Berlin and the district of Barnim, the development of the former sewage farm involves the pupils taking measurements and carrying out investigations.
Lots of associations visit the school, including choirs and theatrical organizations as well as Manga- , Spanish and Art-AG. The school head is very proud of this: „We have the most attractive and cleanest sanitary facilities. According to her „These were renovated and refurbished by the pupils on their own initiative with financial support from Aktion Mensch.“
The high standard of education provided by the Gauß gymnasium is supported by the example of Sandra Weißflog. This abitur candidate finished the last school year as the first in the history of the school to obtain a dream score of 1.0.
