Buch’s strong men are world class
The latest success was achieved a few weeks ago „At the German championships in Dessau we were able to win three gold medals“, reports the leader of the power sport department of the SV Berlin-Buch, Frank Homann.

Bernhard Gromadecki was German champion in the age group 70 lifting 100 kilograms, and Sebastian Graubein won the junior group with 145 kilograms. Matthias Marten lifted in his weight class of up to 110 kilogram body weight a magnificent 322.5 kilograms.
„Let’s hope the year continues like this“, says Frank Homann. „Our department arose from the work sports group of the Academy of Sciences. Power sports started there 27 years ago.“ The specialist field of the Buch power sportsmen is bench pressing. Lying on a bench a dumb-bell is raised high. Depending on the weight class the top athletes in the association lift up to five-six hundredweight. Anyone who takes part in a power triathlon has also to perform, in addition to bench pressing, weightlifting from bended knees and cross-lifting. In cross-lifting the dumb-bells are grasped cross-wise and lifted.
No Bodybuilders
Today, about 70 sportsmen train regularly in the training facility on the Walter-Friedrich-Straße. „However, our sport has nothing to do with bodybuilding. They train their entire body, because they want to look aesthetic“, explains Hohmann. „We power sportsmen only train certain muscle groups with the aim of achieving maximum power. So our sport is more closely related to weightlifting.“
You can join the power sportsmen if you are at least 18 years of age. „You do not have to be very slim and our sport puts hardly any strain on the circulation“, explains Hohmann. But, despite this, you can develop fabulous muscles groups with regular training, like, for example, Matthias Marten.
In December 2005, the Bucher muscle man won the world championship of the WPC World Powerlifting Committee in Helsinki by lifting 300.5 kilos. It was the second time for him. In October 2005 he had already won the WM-Title of the GPC association. To do this he needed to lift „only“ 280 kilos. Actually, last year, Marten wanted to give up competitive sport. After a break of one year he recently celebrated a wonderful comeback with the German Championship in Dessau.
Muscles like Schwarzenegger
In addition to his sports training, Matthias Marten is also a trainer and supports the activities of the Buch power sportsman, Andreas Richter. At present, no man over 50 can lift as many kilos as him from the bench. In December last year, by lifting 245 kilos, Andreas Richter won the World championship title in bench pressing at the World Championships of the GPC Global Powerlifting Committee in Ghent in Belgium.
For this 51-year-old, to date, the world championship title is the highpoint of his sporting career which started in 1981. „During the period of the GDR, power sport was not very popular. In my case it all started from one group. We saw Arnold Schwarzenegger and we also wanted muscles like that. So, we began to train our biceps.“
Shortly after, Richter joined the power sport department of the sports association of the Academy of Sciences, which had just been established. Since then, he has trained with dumb-bells for at least teo to three hours three to four times a week.
In 1986, Richter became for the first time GDR bench pressing champion, three other titles followed. „As GDR sportsmen, we could not travel as widely as other sportsmen“, recalls the Buch citizen. „But there was always a Berlin-representation which allowed us to go to Poland and Czechoslovakia to compete.“
Today, it is all very different, and these Buch natives can show the whole world what they can do. Richter’s next goal is the European championship title. He has so far failed to add this to his collection. If you want to know more about Buch power sportsmen: you can contact Frank Hohmann by ringing 0171-5173889.
